A wet basement can be a major cause for mold in your home. Basement mold removal can be a simple fix or a very involved fix. Left unattended basement mold can lead to black mold spores being dispersed throughout your whole house.

Basement mold removal can be caused by a faulty dryer vent in the basement or it can be caused by leaks seeping through your foundation. Fixing a faulty dryer vent is one of the easy fixes. Often dryer vents will become plugged with lint and not allow the moisture from the clothes dryer to vent the moisture out of your house. If you notice more moisture in your basement during the summer months, than more than likely the culprit is a dryer vent. Mildew build up and sets the conditions for mold to form.

However if you are seeing seepage coming down your basement walls than you may have bigger issues with your foundation. The biggest culprit in creating mold in basements and water seepage is usually your roof gutters. If your roof gutters are not operating correctly than the water runs into your foundation down into the cracks and leaks into the basement walls. Mold removal begins with getting the basement dry.

Clean out your gutters and check to see that the downspouts are caring the water away from your house foundation. Sometimes you may need to add a downspout extension to ensure that the water from your roof is being carried far enough away from the foundation as to run off away from your foundation.

If the water from your downspouts continue to run into your foundation you may then have to change the grade of the soil around your foundation to slope away from the foundation.

Once you have solved the problem of a wet basement and future conditions of promoting mold growth, then it is time to get rid of the mold that is already present in your basement.

How to Get Rid of Mold Caused By Water Damage

Water damage mold can be very costly. If you do not know how to get rid of mold yourself or if the water damage has created lots of black mold, then a mold removal or remediation service is required.

We were fortunate that our black mold was minor and only caused by a leaky window. If it had been our basement or whole main floor that was covered in black mold due to unattended water damage then the issue would have required a mold remediation service instead of a do it yourself.

Water damage mold can cause a house to be condemned due to the black mold growing into the entire structure of the house. Black mold is very toxic and many homes that are in flood areas usually just get their houses condemned because it is way to costly to remove the black mold. This is why insurance companies insist upon flood insurance in a flood plain.

If you experience any major water damage, remove all flooring and anything laying on the floors or wall. You need to strip the room as quickly as possible. Get as much ventilation into the room as you can. If at all possible get your hands on those big blowers and try to dry the walls and floors immediately. It even helps to pull the trim and molding off the walls and floor to get air circulating in between the inner walls and outer walls.

This could take several weeks to get dried up. Depending how much saturation of water got into your walls. Getting the inner walls dried and hopefully the studs dry will go a long way to prevent black mold from forming in between your walls.

How to get rid of mold caused by water damage depends a lot on how long the water has been left standing and how quickly you were able to take action in getting rid of any standing water and how thoroughly you were able to get all the moister out. How to Get Rid of Mold in Your House

When my husband and I purchased a foreclosed home, we had to learn how to get rid of mold in our house. Upon inspection black mold was discovered in the house due to some water damage over a period of time.

The inspectors found black mold on an outer wall in the downstairs bedroom in our house. Evidently the window in that room had leaked, creating water damage and through the house being shut up for such a long period of time mold grew and had to be removed. How we had to get rid of the mold was to totally remove the inner wall to the studs and then treat the studs with a bleach and water mixture.

Killing the mold was not good enough. In order to handle the mold remediation we had to make sure not only that the mold was killed but totally removed. This meant after treating the studs then the mold had to be scraped from the surface until all visual black mold was gone.

Once the black mold was gone from the house we had to have the mold inspectors once again come in and take a sample of the previously molded area to make sure all the black mold was gone. Then the testing was sent to the lab to ensure that there were no trases left behind. Our mold testing was successful.

Now we are left with how to get rid of the mold and mildew in the rest of the house. We were able to remove the toxic black mold, thank goodness, but the other mold can cause other issues.

How to get rid of mold and mildew was created when we bought our foreclosed home. The home had been closed up for a very long time and mold and mildew was visible upon our inspections and the inspections done by our bank. We had to find out how to get rid of mold before we could occupy the home because some of the mold was obviously black mold.

This has been a learning experience and thankfully we did not have to hire professionals to do it all. But some of the work did require we hire outside sources.
